A growing number of cooling tower users are using a filtration system to control particulate levels and maintain the cleanliness of the cooling tower and overall water circulation system.

Water cascading down a cooling tower continually cleans airborne contaminants from the atmosphere.

These contaminants, along with particulates in the make-up water, reach the cooling tower sump and can ultimately flow downstream into the system, where they accumulate in heat exchangers, condenser tubes, and other critical water-cooled process equipment.

In conjunction with corrosion, particles contribute to the following problems…

  • Reduced operating efficiency.
  • Increased downtime for cleaning and repair.
  • Increased cost of water treatment.
  • Shortened equipment lifespan.

A cooling tower filtration system does not replace the need for water treatment, or vice versa. Chemicals cannot remove dirt just as filters cannot control water chemistry.  A filtration system will complement the water treatment program. If particulate is not removed from the system, it provides an excellent breeding ground for algae and bacteria.

Many water treatment methods, including traditional chemical treatment and ozone, can be used in your process equipment.

Most of the air particulate contaminants, including clays, smog, pollen, combustion borne particles, atmospheric dusts, have particle sizes ranging from 0.01 to 10 microns.

These are the solid particles that are washed into the water stream as air gets in contact with water in the cooling tower during the mass transfer process associated with water cooling.

Most common type of cooling water systems include “Disc Filters” but the common particle sizes they retain, range from 100 to 400 microns, which clearly is far from the common range of particulate sizes in air (0.01 to 10 microns), so they will not be effective for removing most of the solids coming from air.

Zeomedia packed Filters, due to its high surface area + porosity (and positive charge active molecules) will:

  • Retain particles down to 1 micron, which cover most of the solid particles coming from air. This range covers Microalgae.
  • Reduces chemical products needed for the whole treatment. Helping save OPEX.
  • Help maintain hardness within acceptable levels, due to its capacity for ion exchange. Helping save OPEX.
  • Reduces pressure drop and energy consumed in the recirculation pumps Helping save OPEX.
