According to Rubén Gregorio Muñoz, president of the Commission on Water Resources, Drinking Water, and Sanitation of the Chamber of Deputies, out of the country’s 3,960 wastewater treatment plants, 1,330 are out of operation, primarily due to municipalities’ inability to pay for the necessary electricity service.
The lack of investment in infrastructure and the poor management of operating agencies, of which only 20 out of 2,320 operate efficiently, are key factors in the water supply crisis affecting both the coverage of drinking water services and its quality for productive sectors such as agriculture and industry.
In response to the water crisis in Mexico, Deputy Muñoz proposes urgent measures, such as exploring the reuse of wastewater for agriculture and industry, and even modifying the law to allow its use for human consumption, as is done in other countries.
