Sand and multi-bed filters, not an effective filtration method.

Conventional filters such as silica sand, anthracite and multi-bed have been used for water filtration systems for hundreds of years; however, the challenges caused by climate change that we are experiencing today require more efficient technologies, with a lower carbon footprint and, above all, at a lower cost.

Sand and multi-bed filters generally present the following problems:

1. Very short filtration runs, which translate into constant backwashing and a huge waste of water and energy.

Due to the low permeability of silica sand and multi-bed filters, they normally become saturated very quickly, especially when surface water or tertiary water is being filtered.

This implies a huge expense of water and energy that, depending on the flow to be treated, can represent thousands of dollars.

2. A high cost of water and energy in backwashing the filter medium.

Due to its high weight (1.6 kilograms/liter for silica sand), a very considerable amount of water is required to expand the bed enough to backwash (up to 25 GPM/ft2 54 m/h) or rinse. with air and water filters. Which, although it considerably reduces the cost of water, implies an additional cost in energy.

3. Poor removal of colloidal particles.

The deficient removal of colloidal particles that translate into problems of fouling and wear in the rest of the filtering elements, which in turn translate into a shorter useful life of the rest of the filtering elements, of the plant and higher maintenance costs.

To avoid this, many companies have implemented a physicochemical pretreatment to improve the removal of these colloids, however, this translates into a higher operating cost, as well as an increase in the concentration of dissolved salts and other unwanted contaminants.

Let’s talk about effectiveness

Zeomedia is the only highly efficient zeolite-based filter media that has been chemically cleaned to optimize its quality and performance.

It generates 60% less waste of water and energy in backwashes per year and up to 50% better filtration quality

It can increase the production capacity of an existing plant by at least 30% or reduce the number and sizes of filters required per project by half.
