Water is essential for all of us and for the environment, so it is crucial to ensure an adequate supply to meet our basic needs. However, water is a limited resource, so we must manage it efficiently from an economic perspective.

Drought is a recurring challenge in Spain, a country characterized by its Mediterranean climate and irregular rainfall distribution. Over the years, this water scarcity has led to the search for innovative solutions to guarantee the supply of drinking water and meet the demands of agriculture, industry and everyday life.

The success of desalination in Spain
Desalination has become a tool for combating drought worldwide

One of the most effective responses to this challenge is seawater desalination, a process that has gained importance in the fight against drought. Spain is currently one of the world’s leading countries in desalination, with a total of 765 desalination plants installed with production exceeding 100 m³/day. Of these, 360 are seawater desalination plants and 405 are brackish water desalination plants.

Desalination: an innovative solution:

Desalination is the process by which salt and other impurities are removed from seawater or brackish water, transforming it into drinking water or water suitable for agricultural and industrial uses. Desalination in Spain began in Lanzarote in 1964 and produced 2,500 cubic meters of water per day.

Due to the desalination process, the current economic development of the eastern Canary Islands was made possible.

Although there are associated challenges, investment in research and development is driving technological advances to make desalination more efficient and sustainable. With a balanced approach to water management and the proper implementation of desalination plants, Spain is succeeding in overcoming the challenges of drought and ensuring a secure and sustainable water supply for the future.

What brings Zeomedia to the Table? The success of desalination in Spain

Zeomedia is the only high-efficiency zeolite-based filter media that has been chemically pre-washed to optimize its performance quality. It offers better particle retention of up to 1 micron, leading to superior filtration results and increased operational savings.

Zeomedia works has a pretreatment in the desalinations process, wich help to deliver a better water quality to the next stage, reverse osmosis.

Additionally, our zeolite filters can be designed and operated at twice the flow rate compared to sand and anthracite filters (20 to 30 m/h), reducing the filter area by up to 50% and the capital cost of the filtration system by up to 40%.
